John Michael Montgomery Kickin' It Up
Several of JMM's songs pay tribute to marriage ("She Don't Need a Band to Dance," "Oh, How She Shines," the hit single "I Swear"). Refreshing lyrics focus on the character of the woman in his life rather than on her physical attributes. A recurring theme finds him grateful for her encouragement and faith in his abilities despite his own doubts. "If You've Got Love" claims that anything is possible with love, even standing "your ground when the devil's at your door." On "Oh, How She Shines," he honors his mate, positively comparing her to an old flame.

"Friday at Five" talks of partying away a week that's "been hell" with a "girl on my arm and a beer in my hand." The lust of the eyes and romantic urges take control on "Be My Baby Tonight."

Montgomery's take on marriage and devotion are terrific. But the weekend recreation he advocates keeps Kickin' It Up from getting a thumbs-up.
