Brandy Brandy
From Mag to Web
Both of the hit singles ("Baby" and "I Wanna Be Down") pledge devotion to a romantic partner, while "Best Friend" thanks a friend for caring, promising to do likewise. Other themes include humbly battling for restoration in fractured relationships ("As Long As You're Here") and keeping romantic disappointments in perspective ("Brokenhearted"). Brandy refuses to be distracted from pursuing her dreams or made to conform on "Movin' On" ("Trying to keep my mind pointed to a higher plane . . . I don't want to stand with the crowd"). "Give Me You" appears to credit God with being a faithful friend.

None

Unlike all-girl acts with a similar sound, Brandy's urban rhythms don't emphasize breathless sexual encounters. Brandy is a lyrically refreshing debut.
