Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

In Star Wars: Episode I, a malevolent Trade Federation wants a galactic monopoly, even if it means warring against peaceful civilizations to get it. Noble Jedi knights enter the fray. After their diplomatic mission fails, the monkish Jedi discover a young boy teeming with spiritual potential and seek to disciple him in the ways of The Force.

This prequel dazzles viewers with sci-fi adventure, strange new worlds and computer-generated characters. It also reveals more about the Star Wars legend. The history. The relationships. The sinister political posturing that later spawned an Empire and sparked a Rebellion.

Along the way, fans get a heavy dose of Jedi theology: surrendering to emotions ("Concentrate on the moment. Feel, don't think. Use your instincts"), mind control, premonitions, telekinesis. There's also talk of prophecies, angels, genetic divinity and a "virgin birth."

Most of the film's frequent, if bloodless, violence involves blasting marauding robots into scrap metal. However, some nimbly choreographed laser- swordplay ends with one man skewered and another sliced in half.

On the positive side, Phantom Menace applauds self-sacrifice and condemns greed as the gateway to evil. The movie's pint-sized hero (Lloyd) respects his elders and longs to liberate slaves. And there's not an iota of profanity or sexuality. It's a shame muddled spirituality taints this enjoyable film's rousing thrills and noble intentions.
